It’s no wonder that 3 out of 4 people experience eye strain. Our eyes are open over 6,000 hours a year and are exposed to harmful blue light rays for the majority of that time.
What Is Blue Light?
Theelectromagnetic spectrumis the range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation and their respective wavelengths and photon energies. Visible light, or light between 380 and 700 nanometers, is the light that we see and only accounts for one part of this vast spectrum.
For example, we can see the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.) The color blue is just below green light and above violet light which we call ultraviolet light.
Ultraviolet light consists of a wavelength from 10 to 400 nanometers, making it invisible to the human eye but consisting of more energy than ordinary light. Ultraviolet light (UV light)causes us to get a sunburn, to age and can also play a role in skin cancer. This same light causes issues with the eyes as well, which is why doctors recommend wearing polarized sunglasses outdoors.
Like the sneaky little brother of UV Rays, blue light is lesser-known, but still, like radiation to our eyes. As they are not natural to the human eye, some blue light rays aren’t processed out by our natural filters and penetrate our eyes causing damage to the back of the eye.

Immediate exposure can cause sore or irritated eyes, difficulty focusing and trouble sleeping while continued exposure could lead to damaged retinal cells over time which can cause serious vision problems such as age-related macular degeneration.
Where Is Blue Light?
Sunlight is the main source of blue light, but the most damaging source which can impact us at any time of the day or night is Artificial Light.
How much of the day do you spend staring at a computer screen or checking your phone? Think about how many hours you spend responding to work emails, watching YouTube videos, checking your calendar, keeping up with your social media and texting your friends and family. At any point today, will you watch an LED Television, play video games or read a book under a harsh LED lamp? All of this time you are exposing your eyes to a major source of harmful blue light.
If this information is shocking to you, you’re not alone. In fact, a sobering63% of adults do not know that electronics emit high-energy blue light
Why Block Blue Light?
Not all blue light is harmful to our retina. Our body uses blue light to regulate our biological clock by using natural light from the sun to distinguish between day and night to regulate our sleep-wake cycle. The positive blue light that we get naturally from being outdoors is also proven to uplift our mood and promote happiness. It’s important to experience the benefits of this blue light, but the high-energy harmful blue light must be blocked as the accumulative damage to our retina is irreversible and irrevocable.
This year, ANSES (French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety), declared harmful blue light exposure a “national concern” that is effecting everyone and needs to be handled before it gets worse. Their new expert assessment highlights “short term effects on the retina linked to intense exposure to blue light, and long term effects linked to the onset of age-related macular degeneration.” In addition, the agency emphasizes it’s “disruptive effects to biological rhythms and sleep, linked to exposure to even very low levels of blue light in the evening or at night, particularly via screens.”
Artificial light can have detrimental effects on our eyes. We need improved strategies and technologies to protect our health, which is why we created this product.
